Five-Year Collaborative Agreement Signed in U.S. to Advance Hydro, Marine Research
Announced June 6th, 2018: The University of Alaska Fairbanks and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the U.S. have signed a five-year collaborative agreement intended to advance research on hydropower generation, marine renewable energy, and underwater technology development. Future projects may involve using unmanned aerial systems for oil spill and ecosystem restoration monitoring, improving energy efficiency in maritime infrastructure, helping reduce impacts to fish and mammals near marine energy turbines, and using geoinformatics to detect illegal fishing.
Initial collaborations will focus on:
- Energy system reliability
- Aquatic environmental monitoring
- Innovative underwater technologies
- Maritime security
Risk Consulting Partners (RCP) is an insurance broker and risk management advisor that has newly created a Lloyd’s of London underwritten national hydropower insurance contract for owners, operators, and developers of small hydroelectric power plants. The Lloyd’s of London hydro-slip is broader in coverage terms than standard local insurance companies which typically cover only:
- Small Impoundments
- Pumped Storage
- Diversion Projects
- Run of River
Specifically, this London coverage slip includes extended coverages that protect the balance sheet from unique hydroelectric exposures. This London-slip coverage is designed for smaller projects typically below 75MW’s in size. Lloyd’s of London knows small hydropower provides predictable, reliable, affordable clean energy that’s locally produced.
